Helping Hats

Nicole A., age 16

Needed:  Youth to work with elderly residents knitting hats No experience needed. We will teach you. So far we have sent 8 children to school for a year through our work.

Dates:  Sunday, Dec. 18th from 2:00-4pm Sunrise Assisted Living 251 Turn of River Road.  (Feel free to drop in anytime to visit the residents).

Each child living in Nagarote, Nicaragua needs $100 for the year to attend school, which will pay for their uniform, tuition and school supplies.  Many in the poor villages do not have this money and so their children never get the chance to get an education. Please help by knitting hats with us, buying a hat that has been handmade, or consider making  a direct contribution.  100% of the money will be given directly to NicaPhoto, an incredible local organization run by a Norwalk woman who lives in the Nagarote community and runs the education project.  She will ensure they are enrolled in school, attend and see to their success.

This past summer when we visited the Nagarote project, two teenagers had just started school and were in 1st grade. We already have raised $300 to sponsor 3 kids to go to school for an entire year(they are pictured above in the uniforms)!   Please help more children and give them a chance by providing them with an education versus a life of no opportunity.

Last year we made beautiful wool cozy hats and sold them for $20 to raise money to help kids in Nicaragua attend school. Many youth knitted hats and then sold them.  We thought it would be great to get others to help us make more hats this year. We got the idea to apply for a grant so we could buy lots of yarn and bring it to elderly and teach them how to knit while developing a bond with them at the same time.

Hasbro Toys so generously gave us $250 to start our intergenerational project at Sunrise Assisted Living in Stamford during the week of Oct 16-23.

Want to learn about the kids we already sponsor?   Consider coming with us on our service project to Nicaragua in August and meet them in person.  Hope to have you join us.

Thanks and hope you join us,

Nicole A.

NicaPhoto, an organization that provides education, art and personal development for disadvantaged youth of Nicaragua, was who we spent a great deal of time with on our visit this summer to Nicaragua.  We met many children but this one pictured above stood out in our minds. He was living with his grandmother as his primary caregiver and seven other children at the time. Two of the girls have been participating with NicaPhoto for the past year and through this relationship Ronnie got to know the family and the gravity of their situation. The two boys, ages 8 and 10, were left by their parents about 7 years ago and their grandmother has been raising them. That being said the grandmother has terminal cancer and hasn’t been able to work for quite sometime. The family had been living on about $2.50/day which is way too little for 10 people to have daily meals. Although younger then most kids in NicaPhoto, Ronnie had told the grandmother to send the boys to the project so that they could at least have lunch. Towards the end of the year the grandmother’s illness became worse and now the 5 children and the grandmother are staying at the project, as the grandmother has been in and out of the hospital. NicaPhoto is helping the family as much as possible and would like to see all of the children continue studying so that they have a fighting chance at a better future.
