Wells for Ariang’s children will enable them to attend school… There are 10,000 people living in Lang village, Sudan and surrounding villages. They are a three-hour walk from the nearest river and nearly a two-hour walk from the closest water pumps. Samuel Garang, one of the lost boys, who returned to his village during the rainy season, observed people drinking water directly from puddles on the ground—the same ground where, for lack of latrines, people use to defecate. He was alarmed to learn the rates at which people in his area are still dying of cholera, a preventable water-born disease. Hundreds of villagers, Samuel Garang was told, died of cholera in the past year alone. During the long, hot dry season, the cows and goats also become vulnerable and die—depriving the villagers’ of their chief source of income.
It soon became clear to Samuel Garang what he would do: he decided that he would raise money to build a system of water pumps, providing a source of clean water to his and neighboring villages. It costs $3,500 to drill one well. Samuel Garang is determined to raise enough money to drill 10 pumps by the time he next returns to Lang village in 2010. Samuel Garang and Gabriel Bol are working hand-in-hand to improve the health and education in Ariang and Lang villages.
