Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service is Monday, January 21, 2019. It is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a “day on, not a day off” – and is an opportunity for people from all walks of life to work together to help solve our most pressing problems. The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, bridges barriers, and moves us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community.”
“Dr. King’s Beloved Community is a global vision, in which all people can share in the wealth of the earth. In the Beloved Community, poverty, hunger, and homelessness will not be tolerated because international standards of human decency will not allow it. Love and trust will triumph over fear and hatred. ”
In honor and recognition of Dr. King, the Youth Advisory Council decided to plan a large scale service project that would address one of Dr. King’s social concerns: poverty. One of the consequences of poverty is hunger. There is a need in our community to ensure that children have consistent access to food. On MLK Day we will partner with Filling in the Blanks to pack bags of food at their warehouse in Norwalk. Filling in the Blanks is an organization that strives to fight childhood hunger in our community.
