About Us

Our Story

Kids Helping Kids (KHK) is a 501(c)3 organization founded in the summer of 2009 by twelve-year-old Lexi Kelley. After being involved in a serious car accident, Lexi received an incredible outpouring of support from friends, neighbors, and classmates and she thought to herself: “If we can continue to have lots of kids do just a little, we can really make a difference for those in need!”. So Lexi and a small group of friends organized their first KHK project in order to give other kids her age the opportunity to feel the impact, joy, and reward of helping others.

As the team of volunteers has matured, our organization has grown to new heights. We are proud to say that over a decade later, KHK has had over 6,000 volunteers to date, representing more than 140 schools. All of these youth-inspired, youth-developed, and youth-led projects have helped enrich the lives of over 65,000 local youth!

Our Model

We empower students of all ages to have a proactive attitude toward change by taking their passion and turning it into action. Every project is initiated, managed, and led by youth. This unique approach shows students the power they have to make an impact in the world and in the lives of others.

KHK is guided by the following model:

  • YOUTH-LED: Adults provide support, but youth are accountable for and genuinely committed to the project’s success
  • PASSION INTO ACTION: Youth explore issues they care about and share their personal interests to create purposeful projects that support the community.
  • PLAN, IMPLEMENT and REFLECT: KHK Staff coach and support youth through the stages of project development from ideation to execution, and later, reflect on the project’s impact and personal takeaways.
  • PARTNERSHIPS: We partner with other reputable and local nonprofit organizations that work to address the needs of children.
Following our 2023 community impact project, our youth volunteers reported:

100%

reported an increase in self-confidence

98%

felt that their contributions positively impacted the community

85%

are more likely to take initiative in a future project

Our Outcomes

Our program model creates an environment that fosters the development of critical leadership skills.

KHK volunteers gain critical leadership skills, such as:

  • COMMUNICATION: Expressing yourself, listening to others, speaking in front of a group, understanding and responding to the body language of others
  • TEAMWORK & COLLABORATION: Learning to be flexible, empathetic, patient, culturally sensitive, and understanding when working with those who have different views
  • INITIATIVE & SELF-DIRECTION: Setting and working towards goals, accountability, confidence, and leading others
  • CRITICAL THINKING & DECISION MAKING: Problem-solving, creativity, proper evaluation, and reflecting to make needed changes
