“While volunteering with KHK, I have learned many leadership skills. The two most important ones are communication and confidence. Kids Helping Kids has taught me how to communicate. When I went through the recruitment process to find the best sorority for me, the main aspect of it is communication. You need to be able to communicate well with the girls in the sorority in order to find your perfect fit. Communication has also helped me live with a roommate for the first time. In order to live well with someone else, you need to be able to share how you are feeling. Being able to talk to each other honestly and without fear helped ensure a comfortable living environment. Kids Helping Kids has also taught me how to be confident. When you enter your freshman year of college, the “new” can be scary. Because of my time volunteering at KHK, I was able to branch out and make new friends, join clubs, and navigate my difficult major with confidence.”

“My favorite project at KHK is the Gift of Giving. Every year I have volunteered at this project, I have been at the gift wrapping station. It is so special being able to see children pick out gifts for their loved ones and see the smile on their face once it is wrapped and ready to put under the tree.”

“The first leadership skill I learned at KHK that I have taken with me to college is adaptability. Having mastered the ability to adjust to unforeseen changes has allowed me to successfully study abroad in Milan, Italy for one semester. The next leadership skill that KHK fostered was team building. During my time on the Youth Advisory Council I learned how to encourage collaboration with an open dialogue among team members. Team building has allowed me to thrive in college especially in business classes. Adaptability is a skill that I frequently exercised during my time studying at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore and Università Bocconi. I spent a semester in a different country where I did not speak the language. I had to navigate my way around the language barrier by taking an Italian class, utilized translation apps, and immersed myself with locals. I adapted to cultural norms and social practices quickly with my flexibility. Local etiquette, dress codes and how to navigate the metro are some examples of life I figured out how to adhere to. Team building has been beneficial to my academic success at Providence College. As a marketing major, a required class (and to this day has been my favorite!) is Organizational Behavior. This class was structured exclusively in teams, which was not new to me, thanks to KHK. I finished the class with an A (which isn’t the norm for me) and I attribute this high mark not only to my hard work, but also to successful collaboration. Our team encouraged each other to share our ideas in a judge-free zone. Having several diverse perspectives allowed us to come to better conclusions.”

“My favorite KHK project is the dress boutique. The dress boutique is fun for me because I get to see others share my passion for fashion! Looking your best is a way that helps me feel more confident. I love being part of a day that encourages young women to feel more confident in themselves.”

“I learned good time management skills, which led me to becoming more efficient. When teaching a creative writing class, I had to prepare a syllabus for my students that I knew that was both practical and productive. Learning how to create an organized schedule greatly increased my efficiency in college.”

“My favorite KHK project was teaching a weekly creative writing class at the Boys&Girls Club. I loved working with the students and planning engaging classes for them. I enjoyed watching the students become comfortable with the material as the class progressed and see their confidence grow.”
