“Smiles For School” is a Kids Helping Kids project for elementary aged kids entering grades 1-5 that is run every August. This is a project that was started by a 1st grader, Conor, who wanted to help other kids that could not get their own school supplies . Our team designs the totes, and then fills them with all the needed school supplies for elementary aged kids who are living at Inspirica – from homeless to home.
What the day will look like ~ We encourage our young volunteers to go shopping for some of the supplies needed and then join us to decorate a tote bag, pack it with supplies, and spread cheer about the upcoming school year! Led by KHK teen mentors who will share a little about their experience volunteering with KHK, we will also talk about how small acts of kindness can make a big difference in our world.
You will get a short intro to Kids Helping Kids and then we will do our project. Please bring any of the following items if you are able to. Make it fun and go shop with your child as the kids we are giving them to do not have that luxury!
Items that are nice to have in each set, in order of priority:
– packs of wide rule loose leaf paper
– spiral bound wide ruled note books
– Washable markers, colored pencils and/or crayons
– Fiskars / Kids scissors
*Parent/guardian must attend with elementary school child
“Smiles for School” – August, 2016
On Sunday afternoon, August 28th, our first ever Kids Helping Kids project for elementary aged kids, Smiles for School was a fun afternoon of creativity and kindness! 16 KHK volunteers decorated 50 tote bags by hand, filled the totes with their donations of school supplies and wrote an encouraging note for a great school year. Our teen mentors shared what it has been like volunteering with KHK and they along with parents and guardians did a terrific job assisting the kids. The bags were delivered to children living at Inspirica. Our KHK volunteers are learning that small acts of kindness can make a big difference in our world!
